Green Party candidate for Westminster Council proposes instant reduction to air pollution

Hugh Small, a Green Party candidate for Westminster Council, says that the borough can immediately reduce poisonous air pollution thanks to its state-of-the-art parking system.

The scheme requires drivers to identify their vehicle by its registration number. Westminster, says Mr Small, can set increased parking charges for high-polluting vehicles based on the online information  about their engine type.

Mr Small has requested consideration of the idea in a letter to Cllr Heather Acton, who is responsible for parking in Westminster.

Recent King’s College London research estimated that 9,400 people in London die from air pollution annually, which equates to roughly one in five of all deaths in the city.

Mr Small, who is standing in the upcoming by-election in Bryanston and Dorset Square ward, disputes criticisms of the proposal as a ‘stealth tax’ or a privilege for the rich. “This is now about saving lives,” he says.
